Larch Mountain Trail 441 to 420 to Wakheena 419C

During the winter season we don’t get out and hike as much as we would like to. But Super Bowl Sunday (2/2) allowed us a sunny day in which to hike a newish trail (meaning most of it was new): Multnomah Falls to Larch Mountain Trail 441 to 420 towards and down Wakheena 419C for a 5.86 mile loop, done in 2 hours 14 minutes, the way we took it.

Being a mid afternoon start, we knew we wouldn’t have all day to explore. We needed to make it back by dark and started our hike by parking, for free, along the side of the road near the Multnomah Falls lodge. We braved the well dressed Sunday crowds, many (like us) happily ignoring the Super Bowl hype, and walked the paved switchbacks to the top of this section of the falls where we hung a left to stay on #441.

There was some mud, but nothing we couldn’t easily get around. The new part of the trail started at the top of the paved trail as we began to head up towards Larch Mountain along the creek and numerous falls. Just past the foot bridge crossing the creek we turned back and met up with 420 to head towards Wakheena. With a dead phone and no AllTrails map to follow, we simply asked other hikers to ensure we wouldn’t end up adding more mileage than we had expected.

The only slightly tricky crossing was once we got to Wakheena where we had to navigate a small wet area where water cascaded downhill. But it proved easy enough.
