In the past, I have done a lot of this. These days I find myself much more particular on how I give away my services. Is there a trade involved (an experience, physical products)? Is the cause important enough? Specializing in non-profit spaces, there are simply too many great causes to volunteer my time to and, since this is my business, I need income to pay the bills. But it never hurts to ask.
